Our Language Teaching Philosophy: Language should be meaningful, purposeful and connected to the real world.

At SthSide Project, we believe the best language learning happens when students are actively using language for a purpose.

Our teaching draws on contemporary language education approaches including Communicative Language Teaching, Task-Based Language Teaching and Comprehensible Input, combined with experienced, learner-centred teaching.

1. Communication comes first

Learn language by using it

We use a communicative approach, giving students regular opportunities to listen, speak, interact and express themselves rather than simply memorising vocabulary and grammar.

Lessons include meaningful conversations, problem-solving, role plays and practical tasks that reflect situations students may actually encounter.

Our goal is communicative competence, helping students become confident and capable language users, not just successful worksheet completers.

2. Understand first, then communicate

Comprehensible input

Students need to encounter plenty of language before they can confidently produce it themselves.

We use Comprehensible Input: language that is just beyond a learner's current level but made understandable through context, visuals, modelling, repetition, gesture and familiar language.

This allows students to develop their understanding naturally while gradually building the vocabulary, structures and confidence they need to communicate independently.

We don't expect students to understand every word.

We help them learn how to work out meaning from context.

3. Take language into the real world

From the studio to the streets of Prahran

Language becomes much more meaningful when students have a reason to use it.

Our Prahran studio gives us opportunities to connect classroom learning with the local community. When appropriate opportunities arise, students may practise Spanish or Japanese in local restaurants, cafés, shops and other environments where they can encounter authentic language and interaction.

A lesson might follow:

Prepare → Communicate → Reflect → Reuse

Students learn the language they need, use it in a genuine situation, reflect on the experience and bring what they've learned back into future lessons.

This is our practical application of Task-Based Language Teaching: using language to accomplish meaningful tasks rather than simply practising language in isolation.

4. Language, culture & the learner

Learning is personal

Effective language learning should connect with who the learner is and why they are learning.

Our teachers consider each student's level, interests, goals and existing language knowledge when planning lessons.

We also teach language alongside culture and intercultural understanding, helping students explore not only what to say, but how, when and why people communicate differently across cultures.

Whether you're learning for VCE or IB, preparing for travel, connecting with family or simply learning for yourself, your goals shape the learning experience.

5. Expert teachers, purposeful learning

Structure, support & independence

Our teachers bring extensive experience in language education and know when students need explicit teaching, scaffolding, repetition, feedback or a challenge.

We combine structured language instruction, including grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, with opportunities to communicate meaningfully.

Over time, we want students to become increasingly independent and confident language learners, equipped with strategies to continue learning and using the language beyond their lessons.

Our approach in five words:

Communicative.
Comprehensible.
Authentic.
Culturally connected.
Learner-centred.

Spanish and Japanese lessons are taught from our boutique Prahran studio, with opportunities to take learning beyond the classroom and into the local community.

What Sets Us Apart

Communication in Context

We teach language for real communication, not just memorisation. From meaningful classroom tasks to opportunities to practise around Prahran, students learn to use language for genuine purposes.

Research-Informed, Teacher-Lead

Our teaching draws on communicative approaches, task-based learning and comprehensible input, brought to life by experienced language educators who adapt lessons to each learner.

Language, Culture & Connection

We teach language alongside the culture and context in which it is used. Students develop not only linguistic skills, but the confidence and intercultural understanding to connect with others.
